The Burns Centre is established at the Jubilee Block,
Civil Hospital under the patronage of a philanthropic
group; Friends of Burns Centre (Patients’ Welfare
Society), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health,
Government of Sindh. The first Burns Centre in Pakistan,
to operate according to international standards, is
a state-of-the-art project and is a model of public-private
participation.
The Centre has the most modern operation theatres,
emergency treatment facility, intensive care unit
and a 24-hour clinical laboratory. All these diagnostic
and treatment facilities are provided completely free
to those poor and needy burn patients who cannot afford
the extremely high treatment costs.
Previously the Burns Ward of the Civil Hospital Karachi
was the only burns unit in Pakistan. It used to provide
treatment to patients from Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab,
NWFP and neighbouring countries. The department manages
approximately 20,000 patients per year, with an average
of around 500-600 in-patients with severe burns, annually.
Unfortunately with the alarming rise in cases of burns,
the Burns Ward had become insufficient to fulfill
all the requirements and there was the urgent need
to upgrade the Burns Unit into a full-fledged Burns
Care Centre and Centre of Excellence.
Thus to bring hope for the burn patients, the Burns
Centre has now been relocated at the more spacious
heritage protected building; Jubilee Block within
the Civil Hospital Karachi.
